Municipal Airport
12x12 acrylic on stretched cotton canvas

I had the idea for this painting in a drawing class I was sitting in on. I envisioned an aerial map of a city or town encroaching on a small airport like the one not far from my house. Stripped down to its bare essentials, of course. Abstract is food for the imagination.

Tree and Sun
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel

Another orange sky painting. These are fun and I love playing with the sky colors. I added a big tree on the right to give a contrast to the bright white sun. My name for the painting is a play on those businesses that are father and son, like the old TV series "Sanford and Son".

Woodpile at Leon Creek
8x10 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
But it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

My son and I went to Pearsall Park and walked down to Leon Creek. I got some interesting photos and this was one. This pile of dried wood hanging out over the creek struck me as a possible focal point or subject for a painting. I omitted some of the brush and a few trees to make it a better scene and painted it a little loose.  I was satisfied with the result as the wood does tend to pop out of the painting at you.

Waterfall #8
8x10 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

Here is another waterfall, this time behind a footbridge and a path up a hill. I did the contrast off the bridge against the water to add a focal point and the trees on the sides to keep the eye in the painting. Both the waterfall and the bridge are objects of interest to draw the eye. Or that was the intent.

Japanese Gardens
12x9 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

On a recent excursion to Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, I visited the Japanese Gardens there. It is such a beautiful place and, at that particular time, did not have that many visitors. So I indulged myself and took time to set scenes while taking pictures with my phone camera. I got some nice shots, including the reference for this painting. The photo was taken from the hill trail looking down into a corner of the garden. My painting "The Golden Koi" was from this little bridge looking at the large fish in the water.

Here is a nice little still life I did sitting in on an art class at a senior center. It came out a lot better than I expected.

Oddball

I was drawing circles, just doodling, when the idea for this struck me. I used analogous colors and then the single contrasting complement. Also made it a square.

The Golden Koi
10x8 acrylic on Belgian linen canvas over MDF wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

I was with my youngest son at the Japanese Gardens at Brackenridge Park in San Antonio, Texas, when this large golden koi swam toward me. It stopped when it was out of the glare so I could see it real well. It stayed motionless for awhile as if begging for me to take its picture. After I did, it turned and swam away back into the glare. Of course, I had to paint him.

Stormy Beach
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

This morning I was at a loss of what to paint, so I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and got inspired to paint waves on a beach. This actually took a bit more work than I expected, not only with brushes but also with palette knives. Turned out fairly interesting, though.

Mountain #4
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at:https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940
This was the most frustrating painting I've done in awhile. First, I made a mistake mixing greys and ended up with muddy green. Silly, aggravating mistake, but what can I say. Anyway, I started the painting with an under-painting using raw umber and then painted the sky in almost to the bottom. Once I finally got the colors I wanted, or there about, I painted in the various mountains, going back over them a couple of times as the painting developed. I opted for a rather loose, impressionist approach to the foreground using alizarin crimson and some of the green mud I had made earlier. My intent was to make the majority of the painting mid-range values with the main peak's light value snow over the dark value rock developing a nice contrast for the focal point. I did achieve that, at least.

The Lithotome
8x10 acrylic on Belgian linen panel over wood.
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

Found this interesting public domain photograph of a standing stone on a rocky beach. I decided to try a composition technique using color values. Using the "a lot, a little, and a bit" scheme as mostly mid-range values, a lesser amount of dark values, and the monolith's face being the only light value. I had to modify the scene quite a bit to fit my compositional idea, but the painting came out really well.

Shrimp Boat 2
9x12 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

The rowboat in my last painting put me in a nautical mood, I guess. And besides, I painted my first shrimp boat painting quite some time ago. So here is "Shrimp Boat 2" This one is at sea with a net in the water. Like always, the painting is better than the photo. It is hard to see the crew on the deck in the photo.

A Moments Rest
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel.
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

Here we have another orange/reddish sky which I really like to paint. The image is of a row boat on the water at dawn taking a break from rowing for a moment. Perhaps watching the sunrise and enjoying the solitude and peace of the moment.

Bow Tie
9x12 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at:https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

I drew this pattern out on a sketch pad and it looked pretty good. I played around with color ideas before I actually painted it. I call it "Bow Tie" because, if the blue is a bow tie, then the painting is of a green woman wearing an orange and purple blouse and a purple hat.
