Waterfall #7
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

I haven't painted a waterfall since early December so I thought I would do one. Here we have the river breaking over a rocky barrier in several places but the main stream is on the left. Two falls are hitting a rock on the right and causing a lot of spray. And the river in the foreground is very roiled do to the falls.

Heron in Flight
11x14 acrylic on stretched cotton canvas
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

I painted this about 2 weeks ago but kept it aside so I could varnish it as it is on a stretched canvas. By far my best bird painting, I think.

San Antonio River at Padre Park
12x9 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940

Another painting from the photo shoot with my son along the San Antonio river last January. This is another scene of the river at Padre Park looking up river from the little dam. Same dam as in my painting "River Walk at Padre Park" but this time I'm on the dam. I took several pictures of this dam and the bridge that is just down river from it. The VFW Blvd bridge (see the painting "River Walk at VFW Boulevard") is about quarter mile up river from this point. There are several parks along the river here. Mission park pavilions is right by the VFW Blvd Bridge with Mission Park on the other side.

Henris Matisse
10x8 acrylic on stretched canvas

The challenge: paint a painting done by one of the masters of the art. I chose a Henri Matisse self portrait. I think I did pretty good. At least it looks like him.

Apples on a Plate
8x10 acrylic on Belgian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork
Another still life, this time with three different kind of apples on a plate.. I didn't want three big circles on another big circle so I made each apple different and the plate an oval. Not sure whether I quite pulled it off. I was also getting pretty tired toward the end of the session, but I wanted to finish while I had the colors mixed. It kind of grows on you, though, after looking at it for a while.

Live Oak Stream
11x14 acrylic on Belgian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

This painting originated as a drawing I did the other day. The drawing was more or less a value study of a made up scene I was creating. It was just another step to create the painting.

Rush Hour
12x9 acrylic on Belgian linen over wood panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

I had intended to post this last night but I kept falling asleep.  So, here it is this morning. I painted this abstract as an X composition. The bottom right to upper left lines are obvious but the upper left to lower right are more subtle. And the focal point in the upper right thirds intersection is a large red blob but other reds form an even more subtle T along the right and upper third lines. Unfortunately, my digital camera just won't do this painting justice. I took about a dozen pictures and could not get the colors right. The light greens are just washed out.

White Bowl
8x10 acrylic on Belgian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940
Haven't done a still life for a while, so I painted a simple all white bowl on a green background. The background fabric is from another still life and I was just to lazy to switch it out. Also, had another panel partly painted that was still a bit wet in the way. It turned out ok, though.

Crinum Lilies
8x10 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940
Did a floral for a change. Here is a painting of some Crinum lilies. I like lilies, but my favorite flower is probably a tulip or a rose. Anyway, a bit off the usual path for me.

Battus Philenor
8x10 acrylic on Bavarian linen canvas
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

I was going to call this Epic Fail #1. The first pour developed some absolutely awesome combinations, so I decided to leave it to dry. I came back later and, it was all black. The only part left was the bottom left corner and everything else was black. But if you don't like it, paint over it right? So I got some red and blue and white and did a second pour. This time it came out with an interesting picture. I named it after a swallow tail butterfly because it looks like red caterpillars fighting.

Morning Stroll Along the Cliffs
8x10 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

I decided to do a painting of a headland at sunrise. I set up an S composition to bring the eye to the lower left thirds focal point, but my original idea of a boat wouldn't really work. I played around with some ideas then hit upon someone walking along the beach at the foot of the cliffs. I gave him a red shirt to bring in the eye even more. Also, there are a couple of lines pointing toward the figure within the cliffs. Of course, I have another orange sky, but I really like it..

Udjat
11x14 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

The object was to create an abstract painting using a T composition. Once I started to think about it, I decided to make it like a frame. But frame what? Well, why not an Eye of Horus or, more properly, an Udjat? Well, I did and it worked. And now you know how I came up with the painting's name. I used a warm color scheme because the right eye represents the sun god. I thought about adding the cobra, but did not have room and didn't want to clutter up the simplicity of the painting.

River Walk at VFW Boulevard
11x14 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940
The second painting from my photo shoot along the San Antonio River Walk last February. This scene is from under the VFW Boulevard bridge looking north. I have removed a few objects for a better composition.

Red Dragon
8x10 acrylic on Bavarian Linen Panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

Almost forgot to post this one. The object was to do an abstract using a diagonal scheme or an H scheme. I decided to combine them for "Red Dragon". The red in the center to me looks like a red dragon in flight. Look at it closely and see if you can see it. I tend to find patterns in abstract or random designs. Probably due to youthful searching alcohol ads for the supposed subliminal pictures.

Into the Morning Sun
10x8 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

The objective was to paint a high horizon abstract so I painted an abstract seascape. I put a ship sailing into the rising sun for a focal point. I paint a lot of orange skies.

River Walk at Padre Park
11x14 acrylic on Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

My youngest son and I recently went along the San Antonio river on the river walk. Most people are familiar with the River Walk in downtown San Antonio, but it actually stretches along the river throughout the city and also along a few major creeks. Here we walked from Mission county park, which is about 2 miles south of downtown and down past Padre Park. I turned it into a photo shoot for painting ideas. At Padre Park there is like a little dam with a water ladder which has some nice white water falls, but this painting is of the dam just before the entrance to the water ladder. I have a thing for rocks and trees and this rock at the point of two triangles (the river and the concrete) was a natural focal point. So I doctored it up by omitting a few unnecessary objects and there you go.

Carnival Ride
10x8 acrylic on Bavarian linen canvas
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

Finally figured out the flow of the high flow acrylics and managed to set up this stained glass style abstract. Once I was finished I realized that it reminds of the Pirate Ship Ride or other gondola style swinging amusement park rides. The orange block is like the front as it swings across the painting.

China Café
acrylic on 10 x 8 Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/artists/gregory-cross-8940/artwork

I got some Golden high flow acrylics and have been wanting to see what they will do. This was my "experiment". I was actually trying to do a Andy Morris type of abstract but the paints are a little more watery than I expected. So, I turned into a type of acrylic pour. Anyway, the final result reminds me of a design of the booth decorations at a local Chinese restaurant, hence the name.

Maelstrom
acrylic on 10x8 Bavarian linen panel
Buy it at: https://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/gregory-cross-8940

I decided to another abstract. Used some red, purple, white and blue. I used pallet knives to put it on the canvas then spritzed it with some water. It is almost like there is a figure of a woman on the right, but then, if I look again, I see something else.
